Are you longing to visit your granddaughter who lives in another state, attend your 50th high school reunion or is there a country you have always wanted to see? This is a great time to make some travel plans and with a little prior planning, your trip can cost you very little while giving you memories that are worth a fortune. Staying interested and active as we get older helps us to stay healthy and vigorous. Traveling is a great way to stay mentally and physically active. Consider travel to places you've never been, to cultures that stretch your mind and spirit. You will find that adults over fifty are traveling more often than the younger generations because we're living longer, more productive lives.

Here are some travel tips for the "young at heart" travelers. There are travel services that specialize in arranging trips for senior travelers, and you may want to utilize one of these for your own trip. Be selective when choosing your traveling partners. You always want to travel with at least one other person for safety and enjoyment. While family is always a great choice, don't forget to think about neighbors and friends, as well.

Be sure to ask about group discounts at hotels and with airlines when you are traveling as part of a large group. Then decide what type of luggage you will take along.Traveling light is easier now than ever before. Many are fitted with wheels to make transporting them even easier. Remember that if you are taking any prescription medications, you may have to present your prescription documentation and a doctor's note at various check points while you travel. Doctor's notes and this evidence will greatly simplify moving through airport security with these medications.

In addition, don't forget about insurance as you may consider investing in traveler's insurance as a good idea. If you do not want to do this, them be sure to check with your regular medical insurance to find out just what expenses will and will not be covered for while you are traveling. You never know when an emergency could strike, so it's better to be prepared ahead of time. Finally, do some thorough research on your planned destination before finalizing your travel itinerary.

A little thoughtful planning beforehand will make your trip a much safer and enjoyable one. Follow these tips to keep yourself safe while you travel.

Be sure to pack enough of your prescription medications to last at least a week beyond your planned date of return. The last thing you want is to find yourself far from your doctor and your home and discover that you will not have enough medication. You should schedule a complete check up before leaving for your trip. Be aware of what measures to take if you do experience a medical emergency and inform your travel companions.

You should also carry a list of who you would like to be contacted in case of emergency. The list should include your name, home address, family members, primary care physician, any health concerns you have and any medicines you take. Store this somewhere handy, and let your traveling partners where it's at.

Be sure you know who crossing a time zone will affect your dosing schedule. If you have any questions about missing a dose, ask your doctor. Check out any drug interactions there may be if your trip takes you to places where food and drink is very different than what you usually consume. Immunizations should be up to date before leaving. Some countries require specific immunizations before they will allow entry into their country, with some requiring shots six weeks before traveling. Also consider the conditions inside the aircraft. Air quality can be dry, so hydrate often. Drink plenty of water while in flight. Get up and move from time to time on longer flights if you are able to ease stiff joints and stiffness.

To keep your luggage light, take only the essential clothing that you're sure you'll need. Be prepared by packing at least one item for weather that is cooler or warmer than what you are expecting. Most don't think about it, but a long sleeve piece of clothing can prove invaluable on chilly nights or in air conditioning-- even if your destination is a sand-filled paradise. Clothing that can be washed and worn again and again is a great choice.

Don't forget your comfortable shoes for walking, but remember the image you'll be projecting by what clothes you'll be wearing. Thieves of various kinds love to prey on unsuspecting tourists; and wearing certain types of clothing can make you an easily identifiable target. Today air travel is very efficient but luggage can be lost or directed to the wrong destination. Mark your luggage with your name and the destination you are traveling to. This will help the airline reunite you with your belongings as quickly as possible. Let people you trust know exactly where you will be traveling. Give a loved one a written travel schedule with accommodation addresses and telephone numbers.
