Web 2.0 Tools: The Key to Web 2.0 Gold
By: Alun Maxwell

Web 2.0 tools spring up like crocuses in March, but the more tools out there, the more mystifying it can be to know how to get a foothold in the exciting world of Web 2.0. I hope to offer a small selection of Web 2.0 tools that could be your starting place.

If you want to harness the power of Web 2.0 and you’re not blogging yet, then you might conceivably be duping yourself. It is the best, the cheapest and most effective way to generate a presence for yourself online.

Firstly, once you have a blog, you can collect visitor e-mail addresses with a fixed or a ‘floating’ form box so you can build a subscriber list - hugely important to your online potential. All your traffic from other Web 2.0 tools like Twitter, Gather, and Facebook can be sent to this blog, and this form box.

Also, you can regularly add content - no webmaster required. You just go into your back office and add content or ‘apps’. The search engines love websites that get updated frequently. Just make sure each update is optimised around a keyword term with good demand and not too overwhelming supply. You can then use these posts to create articles for submission to sites like Ezine Articles.com and Go Articles .com

The essential tool you need to make this blog a success is Wordpress.org. Don’t waste time with anything else. If your hosting service has the ‘Fantastico’ function, then the Wordpress upload is easy.

If it hasn’t got Fantastico, consider changing hosting to say GoDaddy or Hostgator, or find an html coder by posting this ‘Wordpress installation’ project at Elance.com, Rentacoder.com or Scriptlance.com, (the cheapest but only go with coders who have a lot of good references).

Here are three more Web 2.0 tools you can use to get your content into the search results and take visitors to your new blog:

Squidoo.com - Google loves this site to death. You can create your own web page, including video content if you have it and position yourself as an expert in your field. You can also place links from your ‘bio’ box to your blog, which increases your blog’s ‘page rank’. Just observe how many search pages return Squidoo ‘lenses. It’s a whole load, and big traffic for those marketers.

Hubpages.com - not unlike Squidoo, though you create ‘hubs’ instead of ‘lenses’. There are subtle nuances beyond the realms of this piece, but Squidoo is very much about pointing visitors via links to other places online. Hubpages is based strictly on giving great content. It is undeniably one of the more powerful Web 2.0 tools to get acquainted with, particularly if you enjoy providing content.

The other content-driven site to check out is Scribd.com. You can really create a presence for yourself on this site - you can amass subscribers to your posts. At the time of writing, the Scribd poster called ‘Trip’ has over half a million subscribers!

Finally, I couldn’t discuss Web 2.0 tools without mentioning social bookmarking. You can create good quality long term traffic to your new blog using these, and here are the top four to consider: Stumbleupon.com, Digg.com, Del.icio.us (no www), and Technorati.com. Visit each of these once you’ve set up your Wordpress blog.

Do things in the right order and you can make sense of Social Media. Get the blog in place, with the opt-in box (fixed or ‘floating’ - and linked to an autoresponder account so you can follow up with e-mails providing free content and paid offers).
